How Does Virtualization Co-exist Alongside Cloud Hosts?

February 21, 2012 – 11:39 am

Cloud server hosting is a form of virtual UK dedicated servers. This means that although each user is sharing the same physical infrastructure it appears to them as their own independent system. The main difference with the cloud is that storage and performance are elastic and can be scaled up and down. It is also dynamic and can be moved to any part of the network whilst in operation.

From the point of view of what it does there is no appreciable difference between virtualization and dedicated server hosting. Even though you have many different users on the same infrastructure there are all able to use their own operating system. There would be an allocation of storage space and processor power just as though it was a fixed physical system.

Sharing the same hardware with other users doesn’t necessarily imply that there would be any greater risk that private data could be accessed. There is no direct link between any of the setups and systems that have network access would be equally as vulnerable. Virtual server hosting however has the advantage of creating a much more efficient system when resources are shared.

The biggest advantage of cloud server hosting is that it is possible to increase the amount of resources that are available at a moments notice. As demand for bandwidth or processing power is increased or decreased the supply can almost instantly be matched to what is needed. You only then pay for what you use in total which is why it has become a much more cost effective option.

Cloud systems can be spread over a number of different locations and your data and processing can be moved to anywhere within them. Data can even remain copied in several different locations so that processing can be transferred rapidly or even run in different locations at the same time. This also reduces the load on the connecting network.

The network has to be constantly monitored so that bandwidth is optimized. If there is lot of traffic then it would not improve matter to move to much data around to run different systems. At the same time power and resource usage is monitored at each location.

If there is too much electricity or bandwidth being use at any one location then load balancing programs can redistribute various operations. A user will still have constant access to their system though and data can be transferred while it is still running. The same setup could also be accessed from a number of different locations. This can allow for much greater bandwidth capabilities. If all the users where connected to the same location then downloading would be limited to that of the network backbone. If the same information where being accessed from two different end points however you would get double the bandwidth.

The main drawback of cloud server hosting is that you do not have direct access to the system beyond what you can access via the control panel. This means that you cannot access data such as log files. The advantage however is that you do not need as many specialist staff to operate it and this leads to an even greater saving in cost.
